5 months of feeling like we are exactly where we belong…
5 months of new adventures, breathtaking views, snow, a blizzard and now amazing spring weather…
5 months of waking up to amazing sunrises over the plains…
5 months of watching the sun set in dramatic ways behind the majestic Rocky Mountains…
And after 5 months I still find myself amazed daily that this is our home!!
The sunsets from our home in Colorado never disappoint.
If you have ever lived some place that you knew you didn’t really belong the time seems to go by so very slow despite the laughter that is in the home and the family and friends that surround you. Despite the happiness that you make for yourself, you keep that nagging unsettled feeling that you are not where you belong. Your body stays on edge just a little…waiting for THE TIME to arrive when you are finally able to head to the place that you feel you belong.
The snows have melted and the fields across from us are prepared for planting. I love how an approaching storm has caused a haze to settle over the mountains.
If you have ever lived some place that you knew you simply belonged…a place that you can’t explain the connection to but that your body and soul simply knew you were meant to be…the time goes by so very fast. It is amazing when you realize that it has already been 1 month, 2 months and then 5 months since you arrived HOME.
When my husband and I decided that it was time to move our family across the nation to Colorado, after years of having a gut feeling that it is where we were meant to be, so many people were amazed by our decision. But not our kids! They were ready and willing for the new adventure…and ready to leave the hot, humid, flat land of Alabama far behind. Now don’t get me wrong, there are some great things about Alabama like football ((Roll Tide!!)) and our family and friends that we love deeply but we simply desire different things like 4 distinct seasons a year and the ability to breath in the summer ((breathing is important, ya know?)) and we love snow and mountains…all of which Alabama does not offer.
This is across from our home. We have a panoramic view of the Rockies and the ever changing weather and landscape is breathtaking.
Those who REALLY knew us were not shocked or surprised by our sudden announcement of our move half way across the nation…although they were sad that we would be so far away. Thus, the beauty of Facebook, Face-time calls and SKYPE. They can easily live our adventures and happiness with us via photos that I post and talking “face to face” via our iPhones and/or computers! Thank God, for technology!!
It doesn’t look real does it? Well, it is! I took this photo during a hike near Estes Park.
We arrived here in Colorado late in the evening on November 3, 2015 to a home we had never seen and an area we knew next to nothing about. We had done what research we could via the internet but knew that we would have to truly learn the area once we arrived. ((November 3 is Jason’s birthday and the only answer he would give when asked what he wanted for his birthday was “to move to Colorado”. Well, baby, happy birthday!! We arrived on your day!)) Our new home was a very pleasant surprise that we were literally giddy over! My excitement presented itself in the form of laughter as I walked thru our new home for the first time, with my phone to my ear, describing things to Jason who was still 20 minutes away with the moving truck. Five bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, big windows galore in every room, an amazing kitchen with double ovens, lots of storage and a chefs gas range with a sink in the island as well as a large sink under two picture windows!! The staircase was wide and great and downstairs held a hidden, and unexpected, gem that I couldn’t wait to show Jason! It was a true media room! He has always wanted a media room. This one was built specifically to be a media room and it was wonderful…it is now a cozy book room with tons of books, personal art and GIANT pillows for lounging on but that is another story. Did I mention lighting? The lighting in the home was as if I custom ordered it myself. I NEED lots of good light whether it is natural or man-made! Thus, my excitement over the many large windows in every room BUT GUYS…the lighting that was put in this home!! Not even I, and I admit I’m a lighting snob, can complain! This house can glow if I wanted it to at night due to the amount of great lighting that was built into this home!
The sun is coming up and painting the sky for us. I watch it rise every morning from my bedroom window or back deck.
I hope you don’t think that the home is what makes Colorado wonderful because it is NOT. Our home is an amazing bonus to our arrival as well as our comfort here but it is not what makes Colorado the best place we have ever lived. What makes it the best? Here are a few thoughts right off the top of my head…
We moved here with all of our kids therefore our entire “pack” is together here.
The area! You can’t beat the views of the mountains, or the access to the mountains, and all of the adventures that awaits us in those mountains!
The lifestyle that people choose here matches who we are. So many people are positive minded people who take care of themselves as well as the environment, community and others around them.
Wildlife abounds here. We have Bald Eagles that fly right over our home and all over our area. I had never seen an Eagle before moving here except for in a zoo, which by-the-way was sad. Here I can see them in all of their freedom and glory and it is beautiful. We have Prairie Dogs which are the cutest little things…although we know to keep our distance. We also have a community of rabbits that surround our home which is annoying to some but I simply find them adorable. The Elk that we have encountered on several different hiking trips are huge and magnificent with racks so large it would make a hunter’s mouth water. Gasp! I am NO hunter and don’t like to hear hunting stories but if that is your thing I respect it…as long as you respect life and give mercy.
The sunrises and sunsets are simply breathtaking!
I promise you there are more reasons to love living here…let me tell you in a few more months.
No, I cannot believe we have already been here for 5 months! Rarely a day goes by that I do not stop and thank God for moving us here and landing us right where we are. We have had so many adventures with hiking, biking, climbing boulders, exploring crevices and caves, playing in the snow, sledding, our first blizzard (which was quite an experience) and so much more! With all that we have already experienced and explored in this new-to-us area you would think that we have been here longer than 5 months but to us it seems like we just arrived!
This is where we live now…Colorado…it is where our dreams and our future lie…it is the place of many new adventures and memories being made.
